SOMERSET — After working in Fall River, Somerset’s new veterans’ agent says she looks forward to engaging with the community of a small town.

“This is like a little family,” said Micaila Britto.

Britto, a Taunton resident, started in the position last month. She already has experience as a veterans agent, having previously worked as the VSO in Raynham and most recently in Fall River, where she was the city’s first female VSO.

“I already know the job, it’s just a matter of getting to know the residents,” she said.

Somerset’s last veterans’ agent, Heather Cheetham, left the job to work for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Britto herself is a veteran; she spent six years in the Marines Corps before leaving the military due to a service-related traumatic brain injury.

Micaila Britto, now the veterans' agent for Somerset, with her service dog Rabbit, places flags on the graves of veterans at Oak Grove cemetery in Fall River in 2022.

Looking ahead, Britto said she is particularly excited to work on renovations to the town’s World War II memorial. Somerset’s Veterans Advisory Committee recently secured a $15,000 state grant to revitalize the memorial and the surrounding bricks. The town will have to fund the rest of the approximately $20,000 or $25,000 needed for the project.

“I’m really enthused to be partnering with (the veterans affairs committee) and working to getting donations and get it up and running,” she said.
