As you plan on traveling for Easter or a late spring adventure, browsing the newest travel restrictions can help you find the best destination. April 2022 continues to be one of the best months to travel within the United States or across the world as the pandemic threat remains low and entry requirements are lenient.
United States Travel Restrictions
The United States is essentially “back to normal” for domestic travel within the 50 states with no mandatory pre-arrival testing or quarantines. However, the federal mask mandate on commercial transit remains effective until April 18, 2022, and may renew again.
For months, Hawaii has been the lone holdout with a mandatory quarantine waivable with a negative pre-arrival test or showing proof of vaccine. The state dropped these requirements for mainland visitors and returning residents on March 26, 2022. So now, you can fly from the continental United States to Hawaii without uploading test results or vaccine records.
Along with ending the Safe Travels program, the statewide indoor mask mandate ended on March 25, 2022. However, people at least 65 years old are still advised to mask up. In addition, individual businesses may still require wearing a mask.
International visitors must comply with the federal entry requirements. In most instances, foreigners must be fully vaccinated and have a negative pre-arrival test result.
Indoor Vaccine Mandates Ending
While state-level entry restrictions ended in 2021, cities and countries across the United States implemented vaccine mandates for certain indoor and outdoor activities like visiting museums, sporting events and sitting inside restaurants.
Municipalities are starting to let the indoor vaccination mandates expire as hospitalization rates decrease and vaccination rates increase.
Some of the featured cities include:
- Los Angeles (city and county)
- New Orleans
- New York City
- San Francisco
- Washington, D.C.
Individual businesses can still require being fully vaccinated or a recent booster to enter.
However, most museums, sports venues, theaters and theme parks no longer require vaccination proof. One of the best examples is Disneyland and its California Adventure sister park not requiring a negative test or proof of vaccine for guests.
It’s best to verify the entry requirements for planned activities before planning a trip to ensure travelers are adequately vaccinated and (if necessary) wear a mask.
U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands can have fewer travel restrictions than international Caribbean destinations. Fully vaccinated travelers can enter restriction-free from the United States. However, unvaccinated U.S. citizens must have a negative pre-arrival test.
Puerto Rico currently doesn’t require vaccine proof or a negative pre-arrival test for domestic travelers.
Flying To The United States
U.S. citizens and permanent residents at least two years old returning to the United States from a foreign destination must have a negative test result. There isn’t a vaccine mandate for this travel group.
International visitors at least two years old must have a negative pre-arrival test. In addition, age-eligible travelers must be fully vaccinated.
International Travel Restrictions
The number of countries without travel restrictions continues to increase as 2022 rolls on. Latin America and the Caribbean continue to be the most accessible places to visit, yet several European nations are also more lenient toward American tourists.
Canada only allows fully vaccinated visitors to visit by air or land for non-essential travel, including tourism. Starting April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated guests don’t have to obtain a negative arrival test but must still use the ArriveCAN app.
Mexico continues not to require a pre-arrival test or a mandatory vaccine to enter restriction-free. Americans can visit by land or air.
Costa Rica is one of the most popular Latin American destinations to no longer require mandatory testing or vaccination proof. These entry requirements expired on April 1, 2022, but the country still recommends that visitors purchase coronavirus travel insurance.
El Salvador also doesn’t have inbound testing or vaccine requirements for tourists.
These nations don’t require pre-arrival testing for vaccinated tourists, but a negative test result is necessary for unvaccinated travelers:
Unvaccinated non-resident foreign travelers (age 18 and older) will not be allowed into Colombia. Vaccinated non-resident foreign travelers must present proof they have been fully vaccinated for Covid-19 for at least 14 days prior to travel.
The Caribbean entry requirements are a patchwork of minimal testing requirements and relatively strict guidelines. Some of the most lenient islands include:
- Dominican Republic
These islands may not require a pre-arrival test or proof of vaccine. However, despite no testing requirements, the country may require carrying “visitors insurance,” which covers Covid-19 expenses during the visit.
The Bahamas and Jamaica can also be easy to visit as visitors can enter with a negative pre-arrival test.
While the Ukraine conflict is receiving most of the media coverage and this region is closed to non-essential travel, the rest of Europe remains open for tourism.
These European nations currently don’t require proof of vaccine or a negative pre-arrival test:
- United Kingdom
Most of Western Europe continues to require visitors to be fully vaccinated to enter restriction-free. As a result, unvaccinated travelers might be able to enter with a negative pre-arrival test in countries like Italy, France, Portugal and Greece.
Most African nations require visitors to be fully vaccinated to visit and have a negative pre-arrival test.
Egypt is one of a handful of nations receptive to unvaccinated guests. These travelers can enter with a negative pre-travel test result.
Jordan and Saudi Arabia currently don’t have travel restrictions for vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors.
For religious pilgrims desiring to visit the Holy Land, Israel and the Palestinian Territories only require a negative pre-arrival test from vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers.
Australia remains the best option for visiting Oceania. Fully vaccinated travelers can visit the Land Down Under with a negative Covid-19 test result.
New Zealand continues to seal its international borders to foreign tourists, but the first guests can come soon.
Australians can visit as soon as April 12, 2022. Then, fully vaccinated travelers from other eligible companies may be able to set foot on New Zealand soil starting on May 1, 2022.
This accelerated reopening timeline was announced in mid-March. Previously, the international reopening date was July 2022, two months later than the current date planned.
Most Asian countries have strict requirements, even for fully vaccinated travelers. Thailand is open to vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. However, most visitors will need to quarantine at an eligible resort for the first five days. Fully vaccinated travelers may also consider heading to Cambodia, the Philippines or Singapore.
Domestic travel within the United States continues to have the fewest restrictions as even Hawaii no longer has mandatory quarantine. There are several iconic places to visit in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe with minimal entry requirements that make travelers more willing to book their first post-pandemic international flight.
