Samsung has introduced a major update to its SmartThings platform – Samsung Health is now integrated and more device types are supported with the adoption of the Matter 1.4 protocol.
If you have a Galaxy Watch (Watch4 or later) or a Galaxy Ring, it will keep track of when you fall asleep and when you wake up – SmartThings automation can trigger routines based on those events.
For example, when you fall asleep, it could automatically turn off the lights and TV and dial down the temperature in the room. When you wake up, it can open the curtains and turn on the TV. SmartThings integrates with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TVs, so routines can switch channels – this allows your “wake up” routine to turn on the morning news.
Samsung Health integration does more too, in the morning you will get a sleep environment report in the Galaxy Now Briefing, which details temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity (assuming you have relevant sensors connected to the SmartThings network, of course).
The Matter 1.4 protocol adds support for a wide range of devices: water heaters, heat pumps, solar chargers and batteries and more. You can read more about Matter 1.4 here.
SmartThings-connected speakers gain a broadcasting feature with this update – basically, you can record a short voice message and have it play through a selected speaker. This works whether you’re at home and want to talk to someone in the other room or when you are outside.
In 2023, Samsung introduced Calm Onboarding for its own products, but now it makes it available for third-party SmartThings devices that are sold through Samsung.com. Calm Onboarding streamlines the entire process of acquiring a new device – the SmartThings app will show you purchase and delivery updates and will show a step-by-step setup guide once the item arrives.
Calm Onboarding for third-party devices launches in South Korea first and will roll out to other countries soon (countries where the IoT marketplace is available). Calm Onboarding for Samsung devices is available in 14 countries, including Korea, the US, parts of Europe, Australia and Brazil.
